Metaphorical poem
Wednesday, July 29, 2009

Day and Night my eyes I strain,
My parents feel you're a pain.

All The Time I squint and cry,
Gazing hard with my bleary eyes.

Mother Yells and father screams,
Everything passes as through a dream!

You Give me a severe headache,
Thanks to you, many medicines I have to take!

You affect my eyes, sight and vision,
you are a culprit, o black tube

Artemis fowl and the eternity code review
Monday, July 6, 2009

This book is simply amazing to read! Artemis Fowl: The Eternity Code is the third book in the series by children's fiction author, Eoin Colfer. However, to understand, you would probably have to read the first two books in the series though. Further, Colfer's reputation is well-deserved as he is a good writer by giving fans of the series, Artemis Fowl, more action, wit, humour which we all love. It is clear to me that this book will definitely enchant fans of the series and people who have not read the series before. It is certainly an awesome work of fiction. Of the entire series, this book could be counted as one of the best. In my personal opinion, this book should really be up there with the harry potter books. The storyline is full of suspense, you never know what's gonna happen next. However, some parents may not approve of this book for their young children as it contains ammunitions and the main character is a villain in some ways. However, parents should encourage their child to read further into the series and he will discover about artemis's struggles over being good or bad. 5 stars out of 5, praise for the author.

Feedback on e-learning
Sunday, July 5, 2009

Reflections on E-Learning:
i) Overall did you put in more hours per day with E-Learning or a regular school day with homework?
ii) Were you able to complete the Language Arts assignments in about an hour each or did they take longer?
iii)Which assignment(s) did you like the best and which one(s) did you like the least? Explain why.
iv)My suggestions to make E-Learning better are...
v) A general reflection on how you feel the week went. Please share your honest opinion as ALL feedback is critical at this time.

i)Overall, I put in more hours per day on a regular school day with homework.
ii)Sometimes, i was able to finish shorter than an hour while on some days, i was unable to since normally, on a school day, the teachers often explain to us and go through with us, unlike e-learning which forces us to be more independent.
iii)I like the assignment lesson six better than the others, however,i feel the same about any assignment.
iv)Make it more frequent.
v)I feel that some assignments were hard to complete such as IS since my adobe photoshop trial version had expired and I had no way of completing my IS. Also, sometimes it was hard to go to the emb since there were so many people on it. Also, sometimes, the instructions werent very clear and I had to ask some friends who also did not know and after much asking, only some knew. Also, I had to sit in front of the computer for very long which caused my eyes to be very tired and was detrimental to my health and eyes. Most links worked but my chinese video of the xi you ji did not worked.Overall, e-learning was not at all what we had expected. It was burdensome and problematic

Lesson six

  1. The casino being built in Singapore is supposed to be a money-maker and job creator. However, many people have spoken against it. Talk to a parent or adult and get their view on the casino. Listen to the NPR and YouTube offerings and choose one that substantiates your viewpoint and include a quote from it as well. Your blog entry has to be at least 200 words and you must either support the casino or condemn its construction and ultimately the hardships it will cause in Singapore
Personally, I do encourage the building of the casino because it is could bring about many benefits such as to helping Singapore to scale to new heights ,increased leisure for people who gamble and increasement in the number of jobs which could help decrease employment numbers and increasing tourism in Singapore which could help raise money for other matters. The casion can also bring in revenue for the government who could use it in other plans and schemes. However, although some people may disagree as they feel that gambling is potential social hazard and could cause many problems such as:

1)gambling addiction
2)borrowing of money from loan sharks
3)bankrupty
4)family relationships degration
5)hitting of family perphaps due to loss of money

However, the 100 dollars fee to get in could potentially restrict gamblers from getting in since they are already losing before entering. Even if the fee does not restrict them, the family members could still apply for a ban to restrict their family from gambling at all, and thus, the problem is solved and the benefits are still thereThus, i support the casino. Furthermore, there are other ways of gambling already before the casino was planned to build such as internet poker-" Internet poker has surpassed sports betting as the most popular form of online gambling -- an industry that now takes in as much as $10 billion a year".

Lesson 5

Q2. Show how the poem Tom Beatty could be compared to The Rocking Horse Winner. In studying the poem, note that the opera house is really life and when He makes the rules it’s either the Lord or perhaps the devil. Beatty suggests that everyone has about 70 years, but Paul in The Rocking Horse Winner had much less time. Explain what Paul’s weakness was, how the cards were stacked against him and do you think Paul was lucky not to live to be an old man fumbling the cards, leaden-eyed and whining about his losses?

Paul’s weakness is his addiction to gambling race horses. His life started revolving around horse racing gambling and was obsessed with two things-horse racing and gambling.

The cards stacking against him are a figurative term showing difficulties that gambling brought him. It shows how gambling will never benefit you.

Paul was lucky to have died earlier in his life in this instance. If he had lived longer, his gambling addiction would have developed and become even greater such that he would cause people around him- friends, parents, relatives to be worred due to him. Even during his child years, he was causing his parents to be worried. If he had lived longer, it would be easy to imagine how worried they would be after his gambling addiction increased. Eventually, he will realise that he had lived a disappointing life.

2. In The Green Clothes, green is the color of envy, greed and money! This poem is thematically similar to Paper. Even though the poem takes place at a roulette wheel the gamblers from the short story and the poem have similar experiences. Explain how tips, dry lips, and all that was spent in vain could apply to the short story Paper.

Tay soon and yee lian spend all in vain in the story paper. The whole story was about how tay soon and yee lian wanted a grand house. Tay Soon and Yee Lian gambled in the stock market with all they got. They became addicted to the stock market. In the end, they lost all their money and everthing was spent in vain. Also, Tay soon got so sad that he eventually died
.

3. Ah Boh in Lottery has about one dollar, there’s a “blind man,” the number 13 and ultimately zero dollars to bet. These last examples are taken from One-Dollar Gambler. Show how they also relate to Ah Boh.

In the whole story, Ah Boh could not realise her mistakes and was like literally blind to wards her mistakes. Even when her mother her died, she still continued wasting her life on gambling and did not change. She was obsessed with finding lucky numbers so that she can win the lottery , even resorting to copying number from a car in an accident.
In the end, she lost everything, her money, her life and her family due to gambling.

Lesson 4
Wednesday, July 1, 2009

  1. In relation to Paper, you should explain exactly what the title refers to and why it is so significant to gambling, gains on the stock market and ultimately the conclusion of the story.
The paper is significant as it represented gambling gains on the stock market as paper is very brittle and vulnerable to tearing or other forms of damages easily just like how gambling results.Eventually, when Tay Soon died, her mother bought a paper house which was very grand for him to use in the afterlife and tay soon died due to his paper profits and loss over which caused him to be too sad and broke his personality.

2.
For The Rocking Horse Winner, write a paragraph of 100 words in which you point out who was responsible for Paul’s death.

I think the parents were responsible for Paul's death. They were obsessed with money, saying,"There must be more money", the whole day. The mother then complained about how poor they were and that it was due to luck which was why they were poor. In the end, perphaps either to stop the talk about there must be more money or to help the family, Paul became obsessed with horse racing so that he can give money to his mother who seemingly became even greedier and wanted even more. However, his horse racing eventually harmed him and caused him to die.
