Fencing YOG
Wednesday, August 18, 2010

Hi, everybody. It has been a long time since I last posted as I have been busy. Recently, I have been volunteering in the Youth Olympic Games. It has been an most enriching experience and has really fruitful and enjoying. YOG has allowed me to view world-class fencers and their matches with each other.
On to my duties in the YOG, I volunteered as a video assistant. My duty is to record down matches so that matches can be replayed for the referees and players to verify if the referees' decision is correct. Rather than what most people perhaps perceives as a tiring job or " sai-gung", this duty is fun and allows me to watch how fencers fence such as their techniques or their timing. Sadly, I cannot perceive most actions due to my low ability.

I will be updating this post as soon as possible. Thanks, everyone.

Children in the Darkness

Children in the Darkness

There are children in the darkness

Who have not seen the light

There are children in the darkness

Who someone will teach to fight

Chalk and blackboards will not be

To this door there is no key

From this life they can not flee

And these children are not free

Could we simply light a candle

Could we give them half a chance

Could we teach them how to read

Could we teach them how to dance

Or will a war consume them

Their body and their soul

Will their life and blood be poured

Down some endless thirsty hole

Back into the darkness

From which there is no flight

Back into the darkness

Into which there shines no light

Henry M Bechtold

Task 1: Introduction to the Poem

Henry M Bechtold was in Saigon, Vietnam in 1967-68 and again in 1969, going back often because his soul lives in Vietnam and he goes back to visit it from time to time. He was sitting in my hotel room in Saigon just before Christmas 2009 and he was trying to write a poem about the girls who work in the park and how badly men treat them. However, he was angry but unable to write anything that did not sound trite or weak. However, when television aired a picture of a small boy with a helmet and an automatic rifle, he was inspired to write this poem.

Task 2: Poem Analysis

This persona poem is written from the point of view of an adult. This can be seen from how he refers the characters in the poem as "children". This is first-person account because the poet often visits Vietnam and the poem is about the environment the children face and live in. The poet is trying to convey the message that the children are innocent and should have the right to study normally like any other children in the world rather than having to undergo war. It is also against human nature for these children to face the cruel, harsh reality. At their age, they should be enjoying their childhood. However, instead, experiencing war would mentally and physically scar them for life and they would be unable to recover from the trauma. Thus, the poet is also raising awareness of the sad plight of the children in Vietnam.

Throughout the whole poem, there is a repetition of “Darkness” and “Light”. This is to emphasis the difference between these two objects. In this context, light itself represents freedom while darkness represents limitation and oppression.. In the first stanza, "there are children in the darkness" reiterates the title, implying that out there, there are some children who are bound by servitude and slavery. Also, the second line, “who have not seen the light" implies that the children do not know the meaning of freedom, having been kept in isolation so long. However, it could also be seen as the fact that these children are innocent in nature and do not understand what they are being used as. Thus, the poet seeks to evoke pity from the readers. They do not have freedom and are limited and controlled by other people. Children "Who someone will teach to fight" hints that there are others who seeks to exploit these children, desiring to teach them how to fight in order to use them as tools of destruction for their own goals.

In the second stanza, "chalk and blackboards will not be" shows the differences between teaching methods in Vietnam and other countries. Rather than be educated like other children, they are instead taught to fight. Thus, they are unable to decide their future but their future are virtually controlled by people who would mold them to suit their needs. The next three lines show that the children are forced to learn to fight and they are unable to escape from their saddening lives. Instead, these children have only one road to go: Accept their fates. When the poet compares the situation to a door and that “to this door there is no key”, he is using metaphor to show that their path of road is akin to a locked door and there would not be any escape.

In the third stanza, the poet uses rhetorical questions in all four lines, all starting with "could we". Candle is used as a representation of freedom, where "simply light a candle" implies letting the children have freedom. Not only, “give them half a chance” means to give them a chance to study and enjoy their childhood rather than fighting. Then, the poet proposes a question if it was possible to “teach them how to read" and "how to dance", instead of fighting all the time. However, the poet is expressing his sarcasm in these lines. He does not believe that there are ways to set them free and allow them to study.

The fourth stanza paints a gruesome picture of war and personifies it as a monster, who will "consume them", "their body and their soul", draining them from the energy their young and energetic bodies once had. Also, the poet uses imagery, “Their life and blood be poured down some endless thirsty hole", implying that the children would die and lose their lives.

The last stanza reiterates the point that there is no way for these children to escape . "no flight" - and there is no way to freedom - "shines no light" literally meant that they would never be able to savour freedom not even for a second and they would have to accept fate, those "children in the darkness".

I am speechless!
Friday, April 2, 2010

Just a few minutes before, I visited MacRumours, a website to read up on the latest Ipad news. However, there
was nothing much. Scrolling down to the current affairs, I saw a very horrifying title. I skipped reading the post
and just visited the link in the post. I was speechless.

This is the short version. A 7 year old girl was sold by her 15-year old stepsister and gang raped by 7 men.
Apparently, the step-sister first had sex with for money with several men and left her in the living room. She then
gave the younger sister some money and ask her to let the men touch her. Then, the step-sister watched her get
molested. It soon escalated to rape and the 7-year old girl was threatened not to scream or they would kill her.
Read more at:

Currently, one man, Gregory Joseph Leary has been arrested. He has been charged with statutory rape and
endangering the welfare of a child. Under New Jersey law, the 15-year-old is too young to consent to sex.
However, police are stll investigating whether Mr Leary was involved with the rape of the seven-year-old. "Police
believe up to a dozen people were at the party and that everyone who was in the apartment when the rape
occurred could be legally culpable" quoted from the australian.( The link is above)

Personally, I feel disgusted by such an act.No human being should even think of doing this sort of act. Words
cannot describe my feelings. I feel like puking and I doubt that the girl even knows the meaning of sex. This rape
would mentally scar her forever. I hope that the culprits and her sister would be tried for their crimes and be put
behind bars so that they cannot do such things again. Meanwhile, the younger sister could be counselled and her
mental scars could be healed.

In the meantime, readers tell me what you feel and how do you think the culprits' sentence should be.

New Template
Tuesday, March 30, 2010

I recently realised that my blog template was too boring. However, my busy schedule does not allow me to post too much so I will only post some information first. Okay, my tests are next week so wish me good luck.
Also, fencing inter-school competition is in 14 days. I will be competing in both epee( team event only) and foil(both individual and team event). This will be my first competition and we will be fencing against fencers who have more experience than most of our secondary two. Therefore, I just hope to gain some experience and strive for the best.
Also, I have put a mixpod under my tagboard navigational menu. You can just click on it to check out ten songs ( not a lot but will be updating soon) which are some of my favourite songs. Also, this theme is pretty nice and I will probably be editing to make some more columns perphaps.
Okay, that's all I have to blog for today, byeeee.

IT Fair
Monday, March 15, 2010

Recently, on 13th March, I went to the It Fair to look at the new pcs or macs to see if there were any discounts as I have spoiled my pc through unknown means even to myself. Sadly, in the IT Fair, I saw tons of pamphlets thrown on the floor when there were a rubbish bin nearby. Sadly, I was in a rush to get back home and hence, did not take any photos to show you the ugly side of Singaporeans. Of course, some of the sales assistant did give me some pamphlets. However, unlike some inconsiderate people, I kept them in my bag, rather than throwing it on the floor. This is shocking to me as I was able to think of our people and keep my pamphlets. Furthermore, I am currently only 13 years old and yet, I believe that there were definitely some adults who were the culprits. With only a few steps to the nearest dustbin, the floor could be much cleaner. Yet, perphaps due to laziness, they decided to cause inconvenience for people. While some people may say that this is only a small matter and I am making a mountain out of a molehill, I disagree. If we singaporeans are unable to accomplish even such a small matter, then much less talk about more important matters.

Dante Inferno

The holidays have started. All work and no play makes a dull jack, to reward my hard work this term, I decided to play dante inferno and have decided to review it here on my blog.

Review
Dante inferno has been referred to as a copy of world war one but I disagree. Dante's Inferno literally pushes the Mature rating to its most extreme point, as you'll experience and see souls being tortured, loads of violence as you skewer the undead, and blood gushing out a lot.At times, I felt sorry for the people and creatures trapped there. For example, on one level, I fought a horde of undead babies with two swords which was very disgusting. Dante either uses his scythe to slice and kill demons or other malevolent creatures that get in his way. He can use a holy cross to attack the demons. As Dante destroys demons, he gains soul which enable him to upgrade his attacks or give him new types of attacks. When attacking an enemy, you can grab them and either absolve or punish them. Perform a Punishment by destroying them with your scythe and you'll earn Unholy points. Absolve their spirit by blasting them with your cross and you'll earn Holy points. Collecting points helps you to gain either holy or unholy levels and purchase new attacks and abilities. Currently, I am going on the holy path because the unholy path is just too gory. I had tried punishing a demon and ended up tearing it apart, causing blood to spill everywhere. As have only completed the game until the circle of lust, I will review it more once I finish the game.
Background info

During the Third Crusade, the story follows, a deeply Christian crusader general who despite his faith has committed numerous atrocities under his command. Attempting to seek atonement, Dante stitches a bloody holy cross-shaped tapestry onto his torso, which depicts every sin he has committed. First opening in the city of Acre, Dante has been ordered by King Richard I to seize a holy relic before the forces of Saladin. During a raid by the cities peasants, Dante is stabbed in the back by an assassin where upon Death appears before him to be taken to the after life. Despite being led to believe by a Bishop his sins were absolved, Dante is ruled by Death to be condemned to "everlasting damnation for [his] sins", a fate his loved ones will also share. Dante however pulls the knife from his back and refuses to accept his fate, engaging Death itself in combat where he not only destroys Death but also takes his great scythe in the process. He returns to Florence, seeking a life of peace but finds his loverBeatrice Portinari and father brutally murdered. Beatrice's soul appears before Dante telling him he knew he would come after her before a shadowy manifestation of Lucifer drags her into darkness, before the undead begin to rise and attacking Dante. After making it to a chapel, Dante seeks assistance by blessing the holy cross that Beatrice gave to him upon making their vows to be true to each other, to protect him against the evils that await. Upon doing so, a crack in the earth opens up allowing Dante to descend to the Gates of Hell.
